I really need to stick some type of filtering on my carb, yet the way it is situated in the hump on the bonnet it is to close to have a filter or even
a box, so my my idea is to fit two right angled elbows in to the two 38mm holes, and from there run hoses to a suitable box filter arrangment
The carb is a 28/36 dcd, but both holes for the venturi are 38mm wide,
the type of elbow would be like this ebay link

will i lose anything

airbox not needed, strictly speaking, but filtration is a good idea. A foam "sock" filter would do the job. Air boxes do have their uses, though.
It sounds like you'd be increasing the intake length of the engine. Its on par with fitting enormous trumpets onto the carb body. I think you'd make a bit of a mess of the engine doing it this way.
Some non scientific stuff here.
1) I have run a low powered engine with and without a dedicated cold feed to the front of the nosecone. The difference is signifacntly large that you
can feel the difference.
2) Way back in the days of Clubmans A cars running 1700 xflows, some used to run without airboxes and some with. The ones with the airboxes sound far
far sharper and crisper than the ones with just a bucketfull of Webers hanging off the side.
Airboxes.
I'm a fan.
See, no science, I just like them.
Yeah, without some sort of air box i cant see it being other then very ugly.
Actually Airbox's DO add performance. Carburation / tbs' really do work better with clean still air to inhale.
Best provided by a decent plenum.
As example; removing the airbox on a Moto really messes up the power output and smooth running.
Yes... it can be worked around IF a factory Race team with serious knowledge and resources.
But the average Shmuck owner just screws it all up by simply removing the airbox.
So yes.. Fit one, it will help :-)
