Evening all,
now gearbox in, I tried to select all gears and have 1,2,3,4 & 5 and reverse.
Now can anyone please answer this, when I go to select 1st,it goes into reverse. I can tell this due to the noise it makes. I thought reverse had some
kind of gate where as you had to either push down or lift up to select.
The problem Im faced with if it stays like that is you never know when its first or reverse until you drop the clutch. Is there something under the
gear lever that should stop this???
Thanks in advance
Andy
The type nine does have a detent to the side of the gearlever. Unbolt the lever and take it out. You should be able to see a tapered hardened insert.
If the gearbox has previously been fitted with a remote linkage, it may have been removed.

You should only be able to engage reverse by pushing down, left and forward if not the reverse detent is foobared.
Check that there is a plastic saddle on the selector rod

snapper, thanks for that, is the reverse detent an item I can replace? or do I have to "make" something?
Have you fitted a remote Andy? Could be your problem if it hasn't had the reverse stop fitted
No remote fitted, just standard gear thingy I think! I will try and get some pictures if that helps identify if anything is missing.
I had the same problem and the metal detent was missing as mentioned above,I have a spare box so removed it from that if you struggle I have some pics of it somewhere, also had no luck finding a replacement so if you track some down let me know :-)
Here's a couple of pictures of the reverse gubbins that might help
It may help to check the spring in the lever assembly, if that is a little weak it'll select reverse gear without having to push down on the
lever.
Hope that helps
Thanks bonzoronnie
I will have a look and see....
Regards
Andy
Forgot to mention that the reverse gate in the tail stock is held on by a screw & if missing can be replaced.
You would have been able to see the screw if some idiot didn't draw a blooming big arrow on it

here is mine with thing missing............

Me thinks its just called the reverse selector stop and (IIRC) I also believe its part of the rear casing casting (but someone might proove me wrong).
Yeh, you just need a reverse detent, it just slides in by removing the circular dust cover from the end, that gearbox may have had a remote/extension
added as this detent needs removing when fitting one. Make take this opportunity to fit one??
