Zetec tappet noise?
rich201283 - 24/6/11 at 04:10 PM

I have a tapping noise coming from the cam cover, I belive it is a hydrolic tappet or follower that is causing the issue.

Can anyone advise whats the best way to fix this?

I thought all silver tops did this until they were warm/hot has it been run up properly if it hasnt I'd just leave it and see how it goes when its on the road.

Cheers

What grade oil are you using ? anything other than 5w/30 can cause hydraulic tappet problems on silver top engines.
Even if you are already using 5w/30 a dosing with Wynns Hydraulic lifter treatment might clear it.

Im using 5w/20w its been running fine for a while but has just started doing it

In that case I'd treat it to a oil change and try the goo that BT recommends above, and run it until it dies and then change it for a black top when possible.

Had the same issue with mine til I changed to correct synthetic oil. Sounds fine now.

5w20 is a bit thin.

I run one of my silvertops for a couple of years on 10w/40 without tappet noises though I know you shouldn't. 140,000 mile engine as well. Low oil level makes em rattle though.

You need 5w30 in there mate. 20 is too thin so it will tap. I find zetecs seem to prefer fords own oil aswell they are funny with the wrong oil.
