Anybody know whether the VAG turbo petrol engines of 90's early 00's vintage will bolt up to a TDi transaxle gearbox?
Do you know the gearbox code. 02A, 020, 02M ... ?
02A definately will, pretty sure 020's do as well.
Sorry, not sure on codes, but it's a 5-speed from a Pre-PD Tdi
Thanks for your response!
it will be written on the gearbox, so if you can find it that would be best. It will be something like 02J followed by 3 other letters/numbers.
20vt conversion are pretty common so if you can find the code you should be able to fine quite a lot of info.
What are you actaully trying to do, replace a bust gearbox, conversion or kit car?
I'm pretty sure it will, bit if you can get all the info then we can investigate.
Basically I've got a 1998 Passat TDi (90hp) which I will run into the ground, but there's nothing wrong with the gearbox, so I thought of taking that with the driveshafts/hubs to stick into a mid-engined kit car.
Surely the gear ratios and final drive ratios on the TDi box will be completely wrong for the 1.8T?
No, the reason I'm asking is because in a light kit car, I'd rather have longer diesel ratios, particularly as the wheel rolling diameter will be reduced compared to a Passat!
most of the the Vag stuff goes together on the bolt pattern ok.
I am working on exactly the same project at the moment a 1.9TDI O1E transaxle from a passat onto a 1.8T from a golf GTI bolt pattern is ok they dont
all line up but enough do there are a few other miner differences such as clutch splines in my case but if you get an engine from an B5 A4 A6 then
that bypasses the problem, since i am using an engine from a golf that is transverse then i have to do a bit of fiddling.
hope this helps
tilly
PS the code is on the bottom of the box on the finned sump looking bit on the offside IIRC its right near edge under the diff

everything tilly819 says makes sense.
fitting to a 1.8T that was origianlly longitudinal mounted should make like easier, as they were in passats
here is some info on the 1.8T engine codes which says how they are mounted.

Don't know much about these gearboxes, sorry.
I have got a transverse mounted 1.8T on an engine stand so if you want to know anything about the engine, let me know.
