hi all having trouble with my 2l standard pinto on 32/36 dgav. it starts fine idle's at about 900 mixture screw about 3 turns out it doesnt want to know if its less, servo pipe blocked off. it starts ok. standing still more or less will rev to 6k+ just has a slight tendency to splatter a bit but when driven when it hits about 3.5 k it splattters and doesnt rev and have to change gear and sometimes has a very loud back fire from the exhaust. prior to this it was conking out at 3.5k revs. ive checked the jets and float bowl all seems ok the pipes from tank were replaced an engine mounted pump is ok tried it with a petrol can and bike fuel pump and new fuel pipe and still does the same as above. should i be checking the points/ condencer dizzy cap/ timing or am i looking in the wrong place. thanks prior to all of this it was ok left in the garage for about a week then all this started .
timing problem condenser may be playing up
Correct points gap for the type of dizzie fitted ? ISTR Bosch 0.015" Ford 0.025" ---- big difference
start with replacing Condenser, Points, Dizzy Cap, Plugs, Leads and then see if the problem is still there.
Free revving is different from load conditions.
Good luck!
The Motorcraft distributors were not the best and the Bosch auto advance mechanism can sieze causing the timing to be retarded at higher revs. Test by checking that the timing advances as the revs rise using a decent strobe timing light. To free it off the distributor can be dismantled easily but don't stretch the advance springs. It may be possible to just take the base plate off and soak the pivot points for the weights and the center shaft with penetrating oil and working until free without actually removing the distributor
Bob weights stuck ie rusted up in the dizzy ?

thanks for the replies its a motorcraft dizzy with points i was wondering are these any good

as i cant stand point/condenser's as i never had any luck with them 20 years ago.
ive got a omex 600 sitting on a shelf in the garage was saving it untill i decided what engine is going in the kit next but as i have this problem
what do i need on the pinto for the omex to run the ignition. thanks again for the suggestions
i have one of those electronic modules in my bosche dizzy and it works fine was easy to change and should never wear out to be honest it doesnt feel much different but its much smoother with the timing light connected the marks stay exactly the same imo 30 quid well spent
Hi All,
Bit of a post resurection here.
I have a very similar problem
2.0 Pinto
32/36 Carb? - This is my best guess but it looks different to google images as it has round intakes.
Luminition electronic ignition.
Seems to run fine even up to high revs for about 10 mins
After that it really labours under load.
Idles fine and also seems OK at full throttle but anywhere inbetween it is lumpy feels like its trying to throw the gearbox into a hedge.
I dont have a timing lamp so timing is set at best guess.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
