oil starvation
RK - 7/4/12 at 08:04 PM

Went down a very bumpy road near my house, and hit the oil pan, causing the oil press to indicate low. I pulled over only when the engine quit, where I could. Towed back home, all oil drained, pan squashed. The odds of a totally knackered engine are good aren't they?

If you are saying you drove until the engine stopped after losing all oil pressure then you will have caused major damage to then engine.

The road was narrow, and there wasn't room beforehand.

So now I need to figure out what to replace it with. If I said it wasn't easy getting this far, I would be understating slightly.

Engine seized due to oil starvation usually means main bearings and crank reground, you'll also need to check big and small ends, auxiliary shafts and cam .

is the engine readily available second hand? just get one bought from a scrap yard and drop it in.

JDM engine and gearbox $1000

I'm selling the car though, so it might not be worth it. It's beyond my abilities. I would very much love to say it has been fun, but really it hasn't. The roads are totally unsuitable for such a car where I live.

OK, enough moaning. Time to get on with it.
Choice:
Another CA18DET $1000, including new gearbox
good: known, fits, easy, cheaper
bad: old

SR20DET S13 $1500, including gearbox
good: newer, more power (not a priority really), uses the same AEM ECU, same transmission, more common
bad: a bit more money, more complicated to install, may require bonnet fettling (no big deal...)

Either way I need another intercooler, which is last on the list. I would like to at least rebuild the bottom end of the wrecked engine just for the experience, and then either sell it or keep it as a spare (now that's pessimism). Have an engine stand, I, rather intelligently, I think, did not get rid of a few years ago. Have makeshift hoist, and although you may think this is a silly idea, I am going to have a go myself. I have nice neighbours who can help with lifting.

Ideas please!
