Pinto water pump- rebuildable?
James - 31/8/04 at 02:28 PM

Have just aquired myself a 1.6 Capri Pinto alloy water pump.

Want to fit it instead of the original Sierra one at it's much lighter and is a quick fit.

Only thing is- it's a lot 'stiffer' to turn than the Sierra one. Best way to describe it is: if I hold the body of the Sierra and spin the pump it will 'run on' for up to a turn. With the new one it stops immeadiately.
The Heynes says there's no fixable parts but I was wondering if anyone's done anything that free them up at all.

Cheers,

James

is it that the 'stiff one' has good seals and more friction, and its the 'light' one thats on the way out?

Typical sort of comment from you Gussetson!

Possible I guess- but the steel Sierra one had only done 60K and the Capri was a 'D' reg so I'd imagine had done more miles.

finish building the car, worry about 0.5kg lighter water pumps later..

Yeah alright smart-ass... you saw it last night- it's blatantly much easier to fit it now (while it's in bits!) than later when the water will need to be drained and loads of belts/alternator will have to be removed first!

James

EDIT: Anyway, it's your fault for telling me it was all too heavy that I'm paranoid about the weight!

They're only £12 new, stop being a tight git.

I bought mine 2 weeks ago, I consider tham as a disposable item like spark plugs etc, it was £9.85 +VAT. They are about this price at ANY motor factors

James

I've a spare new ali one sitting in my garage,it also has some resistance when you turn it so no need to worry mate.

If in doubt you can have mine for a tenner and a bacon roll and a cup of tea,i'll even throw in a durite water temp gauge too
