Ardrox alternative for leak test
unijacko67 - 31/8/12 at 09:09 PM

Like above, I would like to leak test my alloy sump, it holds water, but other than buying some Ardrox dye @ £30.00 for aerosol tin what else could I use to test it. Paraffin or Methanol perhaps?

Thanks in advance.

Turps from b&q or similar, not as messy or smelly as derv. Brake cleaner would be another but nearly as expensive as the dye.
I've used a bottle of turps then dust flour around the outside, if its leaking you'l see it, you might be able to dye the turps with felt pen ink or similar.
Water with food colouring might work as well.

Paint the welds outside with whitewash, fill the sump with paraffin and leave for a few hours.

why not fill it wit oil and warm with a flame you will detect oil by touch when the sump cools down. I think if it hold and retains water oil wont be a problem

Acetone/nail polish remover. IT will find any small pinholes etc and also when you come to reweld it there will be no contamination as it evaporates off very quickly.

Thanks for replies, I have acetone (for the fibreglass on my plastic pig) so can use that then pour back into the tin after testing for leaks.

Cheers again.
