Duratec Second Start Video
Furyous - 8/1/13 at 02:52 PM

Unfortunately, after some trouble getting the engine started, by the time it was showing signs of life I was too excited to remember the video camera.

Pjay came over on Sunday to help get it running, but by the time we were set up and ready to try it was nearly time for him to go home. The engine was turning over, and we were getting fuel and sparks but it wouldn't fire up.

Yesterday I sat and had a think and eventually found something on Google relating to Tunerstudio not showing an RPM reading while cranking the engine. It turns out there's a "dual/multispark" setting which defaults to something I don't want. So I disabled it and started cranking. I was now getting an RPM reading in Tunerstudio of something around 200rpm. Perfect! And then the engine spluttered a bit. That was when I should have set the camera up but I kept going instead.

After a lot of backfiring through the throttle bodies, thick smoke through the exhaust and inlets, and failed starts, it finally caught on and ran steadily.

Today I got some video of the second start, so just imagine this with more smoke and not catching on so easily. Also, try not to focus too hard on the exhaust manifold.

The throttle pedal will definitely need a return spring because it keeps sticking at about 5%. That's an easy fix but I'll need to find out who sells suitable ones locally.

I just need to finish fitting the clutch system now, but I'm waiting for some parts to come in the post.

The car will be going on a shipping container on Monday, so I'll finish tidying everything up once it's in New Zealand. I'll need to change a bunch of things to get it road legal there anyway.

Fantastic, another Duratec running - don't leave it ticking over for extended periods like I did and get petrol into the oil.

Keeps the revs up!!

Good luck with your move

Good work!

I got caught out by the multispark thing as well. Are you using Microsquirt? If so I'd recommend changing to MS2 Extra code, it worked better for me and there is more support for it.

I'm using a Microsquirt v3.00 with, I think, v3.78 firmware. I'll look into the Extra code later on. At the moment, I know it's working and I don't want to change that between now and getting the car into a container.
