
Ive just discoverd that one of my con rods i was planning on using on the rebuild, has the small end bearing spinning in the top of the rod, so
useless!
Ive got a few spare ones, but not a matched set, can i use one of those?
all of the spare ones are good, and one of them weighs pretty well the same as the duff one
Also, what is the best way of numbering stuff like conrods, mains etc, No stamping,
or just a touch of white enamel

If its from the same engine and the weight is close then no problem at all, for numbering I use a deemed with a steel burr and engrave the number on
both the rod and its matching cap

Individual rods from the same engine type is OK as long as they are essentially the same design and weight
You can fit any set of 4 ( or 6 or 8 etc) to any engine as long as they will fit
For instance Datsun, SAAB and Fiesta desiel rods can be made to fit a Pinto

If you have access to decent scales (perhaps while swmbo is out shopping you could the kitchen scales
) measure the weight of all the rods you have
and pick 4 that are the closest.
Ideally balance match the weight over all and each end ---- easier than it sounds.
Usually the best way of numbering is with a centre punch to make dots ie .. .. ... ....
Mark both parts of the rod away from highly stressed area.
You don't have to worry too much about numbering, certainly rods and pistons. You will be honing and re-ringing anyway.
I have used kitchen scales to match weights. I ended up with 8 rods and 7 pistons that were suitable. I swapped pairs about until I ended up with 4
piston/rod combos that weighed within 1g of each other. Basically heaviest piston with lightest rod type of idea.
