Turbo Selection for BEC advice...
cloudy - 12/2/13 at 01:18 PM

Have just been reading up on turbo selection theory - am still not quite there, but interested in seeing which of these 3 turbo's people would choose from the map and why....

Looking for between 225-250hp, on a GSXR1000 -

T3 .50

T3 .60

TD04 16T

second one isn't a 60 trim compressor map. 3rd seems to be operating outside peak efficiency much of the time?

Fixed -

Yes, but a lot of the "ideal" graphs I've seen seem to do this, and it's the efficiencies across the top on full boost that are important - I'm not sure!

Not an answer to your Q but wouldn't a Rotrax supercharger be a simpler & cheaper solution, I assume they do one for the Suzuki?

rotrex superchargers are hugely expensive plus I'd have to build a drive adapter for it...

James,

Good to see you are turboing, you will enjoy the technical challenge I am sure.

Regarding choice of turbo, I don't know the answer. All of those 3 look credible from my basic knowledge, although I'd tend to go with one of the last two as the first seems to be on its limits.

I've a 16T on a gsxr1100 and that works nicely, but I've no idea if it is better than the others. My argument was that the volvo 850R T5 makes 250bhp at 6k RPM from about 2.3litres. My engine is half the capacity but revs to double that, so should get 250 or so. Also 16T are junk yard cheap.

If I were doing it again then I'd probably consider a ball bearing turbo. Supposedly they are freer running which boost up quicker, which can only be a good thing.

Looking forward to how this project develops.

Matt
