Zetec Cooling Issues

Hi Everyone,

I just started my westfield with a 2.0 zetec blacktop engine.

The strange thing is that when I start the engine, the level in the expansion tank raises. And when I shut off the engine, the level comes down again.


I dont have a heater installed and therefor blocked one if the thermostat outlets (the one on the intake side).
The other outlet (bypass) has been tee'd with the outlet from the expansion tank, and this pipe goes to bottom of the radiator before the waterpump. I've seen people running seperate lines for this, Is that a must? If yes, why?

Is it normal that the level rise just after start?
Could this caused by air locked somewhere in the system? How do you usually bleed the system?

I really appriciate some help

Here you can see a picture of the thermostat bypass line connecting through a Y-pipe with the line from the expansion tank. And then Tee'd before the waterpump.

It may be hard to see the pipe since its beneath the big pipe going from the thermostat to the upper end of the radiator.

It is actually fairly normal most tintops do it to some extent, a bigger flowing by-pass will reduce it but it won't get rid of it completely.

Separate the header tank and bypass connection.

The header tank connection should go as close as possible to the rad on thee bottom hose and the bypass hose as close to the water pump as possible.

That will solve the problem.
