Hello Experts. Sorry to cover some old ground. Present engine probs, (see -
http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/9/viewthread.php?tid=187214), have prompted me to think more seriously about changing to a Zetec.
Existing g/box from X-reg Capri 1.6, with separate bell-housing. So Ford engine would be favourite, to save having to buy new bell-housing. After much
browsing here, and finding different views as to which Zetec version is preferred, am now more confused. Have read that Puma version requires new
bell-housing - is this correct?
At the moment, I'm looking at possibility of using 1.4 Zetec (ex- Fiesta, Focus). Hopefully cheaper than 1.6. Will the David Andrews guide to
Zetec installation also apply to the 1.4?
The Zetec "E" as used in 1.8 and 2.0 form in the early Mondeos and Mk 1 Focus will bolt strait onto a standard Ford bellhousing as used by
Pinto's, x'flows etc.
The Zetec "SE" as used in the Fiesta, Focus and Puma in 1.25, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.7 forms is a totally different and unrelated engine (Yamaha
design) and needs a different bellhousing.
To keep it cheap and easy stick to a zetec E. They did a 1.6 silvertop as well but why bother.
A 1.8 mondeo between 93~99 can be had for a couple of hundred quid and you could use most of it for a cheap reliable transplant.
1.6 Silver Top Zetec is just about as unbreakable as you will find and cheap as chips.
Once again, LCB-ers come up trumps! Thanks for your replies, and the clarification of the bell-housing issue.
As per another thread the black top has the two part sump and is cheaper and easier to lower to suite a locost. The 1.8 has the 220mm flywheel you
want.
If your not after a race engine and you make stuff your self you could install it for the price of a night out.
^^ I've got a complete 1.8 blacktop you can have for not very much - comes with a free focus with 6 months MOT so no courier needed
