
Filled my newly rebuilt 3.9l rv8 with vr1 oil a few days ago. It took all 5l without any on the dipstick. After some research I have found out the capacity is 5.5 to 6 litres. I bought more and put another litre in and still no mark on the dipstick. After another half litre and still no mark on the dipstick I became concerned and came in. Its not on the floor because I checked. I checked the dipstick tube was pushed in all the way. Where's the stuff going?
you sure your using the right dipstick and its not been cut down also is it a standard sump
An option is to keep filling until dipstick registers as you can always drain out and reuse
Also take a plug or 2 out and see if there is oil in the bores
Do you have an oil cooler?
Did you fill oil filter or was it dry?
Do you have a remote oil filter and cooler, my Westy 3.9 v8 takes 7.5 litres of oil? as the cooler and pipes hold about 2 litres.
As far as I am aware the sump is standard Rv8 Range Rover and I don't have a remote oil filter. The dipstick and sump came off a scrap 3.5l V8. I thought it might be filling the bores somehow so I turned it over by hand with a spanner and found no evidence of hydraulic lock.
My mates Westfield has a bigger sump and takes 9 ltrs it does have an oil cooler.
From my old range rover days, around 6 litres of oil.
Did the oil come in 4 litre bottles ?
Nah - 5L Valvoline VR1 Mineral Oil.
What damage can you do to a engine by over filling?
Crankshaft starts thrashing in the oil, builds pressure in the crankcase and pushes oil out the seals, also does a good job of turning the oil into foam.
Try taking the dipstick out and poking a straightened wire coat hanger down the hole until it bottoms out. See if there is any oil on that and
compare the length that you have to use with the length of the dip stick.
When I filled my BMW engine from dry it used more oil that I was expecting as well. I guess that with a completely dry engine you loose quite a bit
sticking to surfaces on its way down to the sump.
If you've started with the oil then you must be close to a first engine start - good luck and if you need an extra pair of hands, let me know.

don't forget to prime the oil pump - either pack it with vaseline (aka petroleum jelly) or removed the distributor to whizz the oil pump round;
the tool to do this will vary according to the age of the engine - earlier ones would need a slot to fit over the oil pump tang, later ones require a
flat bar like a very big flat bladed screwdriver.
Was the dipstick and tube matched, have you got the 3.5 dipstick in the 3.9 tube?
Struggling to remember but I believe the 3.5 carb tube was shorter than a 3.9 EFI, in which case your dip stick is to short.

Turns out this is quite common. Does anyone here have 3.9 rv8? If so could you measure the dipstick length and the tube length? Thanks
Just measured my westfield dip stick, the blade lenght is 55cm thats from the bottom of the little locating cup at the top of the stick, full mark is 7.5cm from the bottom of the stick and min mark is 4.5 from the bottom of the stick, and my tube lenght is 20cm to the top of the block.
