First Engine Start
tims31 - 24/6/14 at 06:35 PM

Well after help from big_wasa and TurnipFarmer, and working my way through the engine loom, ecu wiring and picking up my silencer I managed to finally get a first start on the engine. Haven't got round to fitting the cooling yet but manage to run it for 30 seconds.

Made sure I had checked all the connections and fuel lines, cranked it over a couple of times without the spark generator lead connected to ensure the oil had circulated and then reconnected. Engine fired up on first turn of the key and run fairly smooth, a little hesitant on initial throttle opening but I didn't have the vacuum line connected from the bottom of the fuel pressure regulator so hoping that might help there.

Once I have the cooling system installed and the vacuum hose connected I should hopefully get a better Idea of how it runs. Not bad seeing as the engine has been in my garage for two years and only really had a clean up and the Cam belt changed.

Happy days...

pressure line to the regulator is only any use if you are doing forced induction (to compensate for the boost pressure). Looks like your throttle body isn't connected to the airbox?

The throttle body is connected to the front of the plenum, and the maf I just had on top of the engine. I was told to feed the line off the bottom of the pressure regulator back to the tapping in the plenum?

Good feeling isn't it. Just started mine for the first time at the weekend as well. Congratulations.

The tps is saying there is load and the maff is saying there isn't.

All the sensors connected and it will run fine but air leaks are the big thing to watch with the oem set up

Great, will try and get the rest connected up soon but the space is going to be tight to fit the MAF and an air filter in behind the radiator.

I also need to find a piece of tubing that will connect from the Throttle body to the MAF as the difference in Diameter seems to be more than companies seem to do for the silicon pipes.
The throttle body inlet is 82mm and the MAN outlet is 75mm.the largest I have found so far is 63mm

Got to love the combo, short, socks and boots

tims31 - 24/6/14 at 08:20 PM

Yep, safety boots. After breaking a toe a few years ago I always wear them when working in the garage and I hate being too warm.

i love first start videos. it has to be one of the best rewarding parts of the build the only other thing that topped it for me was first drive under its own steam

My first drive was terrifying! I had to drive round the North Circular to the SVA Centre in Edmonton.

Yep, I'm looking forward to the first drive too, not around the North Circular I hope, on some private area if I can get it there

A couple of months away from that though I think at the moment

If you are using a MAF it must be in the airflow otherwise it is not read correctly (!). The FPR can be left to atmosphere unless you have forced induction. You can connect it to the plenum but it will do nothing as the plenum is at the same pressure as normal atmospheric pressure.
