Silencer dilema...
Nickp - 30/9/16 at 06:32 PM

Hi,

I'm trying to sort a silencer for my BMW 6pot powered Haynes without spending silly money, and it needs to pass IVA.

CBS do them for £210, which isn't bad and their 5x24" claims 94dB, depending on engine.

However I've seen this 6x16" one on ebay for £63 and I just need to sort a tailpipe to suit.

Universal Free Flow Stainless Exhaust Silencer Box 6" Dia 2.5" x 16" WELD 63mm

The silencer volumes are about the same, so all things been even, am I going to get a similar dB level?

Length is more important than diameter.

I tend to agree. I have no idea about silencers though, sorry!!

Jokong aside. In my engineering head I feel length is more important. You want to disrupt and distort the pulses as much as possible 8" or 50% extra length is going to do this better than 1" in diameter. The other thing to consider is what it is packed with.

You want to use accustafill and loose the wire wool + glass.

I agree with the length of a silencer plus correct baffles and packing

This is a very interesting read....

Come to that I don't understand women, modern life or even myself anymore. But at least I'm happy being old and grumpy.

Cheers, they are cheap, and I can get an extra 2", which should help
