Air Flow Motor???????????

A mate of mine is having problems with his M reg escort and the garage have told him it's to do with his "air flow motor"...... have any of you guys heard of one of these?

Where can it be found? what's involved in replacing it? Pictures would be helpful..... or is this a case of a dodgy garage drumming up work for themselves?

if its got an uneven idle it needs cleaning,not much else goes wrong with them

Sometimes it is called a steper motor. It would be locatedon the airflow meter and have 2 wires attached to it.

could be air flow meter...... whoever wrote this note needs to take handwriting lessons..... or possibly a pint of arsenic to steady his hand.

so where do I find the air flow meter/motor? I'm not particularly familiar with the layout of ford engines

Probably somewhere between the inlet manifold and the air filter.

On a sierra the air flow meter is a large box on the engine side of the air filter, which contains a large vane which is deflected by air flow. The greater the flow the more the vane is deflected.

I think conrod has the answer here, I don't think it is airflow meter, it will be the idle control valve, which is a motorised valve that bypasses the throttle butterfly to control the idle speed. As Conrod said, they get clagged up with carbon gunge, especially on cars used for short journeys, and then make the car stall. (as in repeatedly, usually coming up to junctions when you dip the clutch etc)

The answer is to take off the valve (2 screws) and intermittently apply 12v to it whilst spraying carb cleaner through it.

The valve is located on the inlet manifold, near the throttle housing.

Actually it sounds like NS Dev has just solved two problems, well three but one don't count since it's not a problem since I turned my fiesta into an accordeon.

My mates car keeps stalling as he slows down for junctions, traffic lights etc. He took the car for it's MOT,which it passed, and when he asked the mechanic about the stalling the mechaninc said he has a fault with his air flow motor/meter.

And clogged idle control valves are something that most "mainstream" cars seem to suffer with now. I have cleaned these bloody things out on Vectras too many times now!!! And Escorts, and Fiestas, and cavaliers etc etc etc etc etc etc!

The old valves (like on the 16v Xe powered vauxhalls) used to be great and rarely gave trouble, but the new (I think cheaper!!!!) ones give no end of bother!!
