Ford type 9 gearbox. There are two electrical connections near the rear. One is the reversing light switch. What is the other. It is on the end of the speedo cable connection, is it for an electronic speedo ?

I think I have a type 9 that has those connections

I thought they were both for the reverse light? I am probably wrong. Have you got a pic?

Depends if the earth light is earthed through the gearbox. If not thgen both are likely to be for reverse light.

Find out by testing with a multimeter (set to resistance. with the gearbox in neutral there should be no connection between the 2 (infinant resitance). In reverse gear the resitamce should be very low (meter reads 0.0 somthing). If they do not comply to this then they are most likely do seperate things.

reversing light connection should be a two pin fitting high up on the tail of the box just below the gear lever (I think on the right when view from the rear, but could be wrong).
The speedo drive is low on the tail and IIRC has a captive loom (2 or 3 wires) and is on the left of the box when viewed from the rear.

Sorry mate I meant to say I have one with those connections and I agree that one is for the reversing light (it has a couple of bullet type connectors) and the other one is for a speedo and as JGG says it has a captive loom where the mechanical speedo drive would normally come out.

Yep, your have described what I am looking at. Now, what do I do with it ? Have you used it to connect your speedo ?
Or have you connected into something else?

I used the reversing light switch to switch my reversing light.. ho ho

I used the etb electronic speedo with their own sender and magnet system on the prop/diff flange. (this is because the box I have with the electronic speedo sender is my spare!)

I would imagine that if you use an electronic speedo then it would probably work with your box but you need to ask your speedo manufacturer first.
