pinto probs!

just rebuilt my 2l pinto, with an unleaded head,Burton camshaft and twin 45 webbers, and non vac performance dizzy.
Static timing set at 6 degrees,
engine will run sweetly on start up in neutral, however when I try to drive it , as soon as I try to accelerate the revs drop and it sometimes cuts out , any ideas anyone ????
not got much hair left to pull out now!!

Carbs all balanced on fitting / refitting them ?
It's quite conceivable to have a nice tickover with no actual load, then when you ask it to actually do some work, the lazier of the two carbs doesn't actually deliver.
That would be my very first port of call.

Does it pink and then stall?
The timing could be too far advanced at Idle

Were just sorting our timing out again after swapping back to the original carb for the MOT (from 40's) and we've had to advance the timing about 7deg. So you might have to retard yours a bit, unless our 40's were a bit weird and caused this, they were certainly a bit rich!

First of all check all the jets are clear and tightly screwed home and the accelerator pumps are squirting they clogg easily.

Also check the mechanical centrafugal advance isn't sticking. I take you have no vac advance connected but Check the condensor is tightly screw to the dizze base plate and the base plate earths ok to the dizze body.


If its on points check ther points gap with Ford dizzies is 0.023" to 0.027" and the gap tends to close up a fair bit after initial running.

I think 6 degrees static timing is nowhere near enough.

Depending on the cam you have fitted, you will need at least 10 degress static and probably 12-14.

Mine is set at 14. with fast road cam and twin 45's

Thanks for the replies, been fiddling about!!
jets all cleaned and secure, static advance now set to 12 degrees,
on sticking my ear to a length of rubber hose , the carb nearest the scuttle is sucking more air than the other one , so I guess a trip to the rolling road is on the cards to balance them up and get it sorted out!!
