
Hi guys
I'm in the U.S. and need a little advice. I have a zetec crate engine and have found a t9 gearbox (very rare here) from a Merkur XR4TI at a
salvage yard. So far the only bellhousings I have found are from Caterham (very pricey) and Birkin who have not gotten back with a price yet.
What do you guys use and who sells them.

Should bolt straight on?? All Ford engine & gearbox bolt patterns are the same.

Did the Lima engine in the Merkur not have the same bellhousing pattern as the Pinto over here? If so, the Merkur housing should fit the Zetec.

Thanks for the response, I draged the t9 and bellhousing (Merkur) home from the savage yard, removed the bell and held it up to the motor....no
match!
Top two holes on bell are way high and the starter is in a different location.
Zetec is a two liter, 2001 intended for a Ford Escape or Mazda Tribute, looks the same as a Focus from what I can tell.
Starter on this Zetec is on the right just under the intake manifold.
On the bell its bottom right.
Can anybody point me in the right direction ?

If it's a true zetec, line up the top holes...and see if the block mounting holes match up.
It's unlikely the sump ones will, but so long as the block holes line up you'll be OK.
If they do match up, use the starter location on the T9 bellhousing. You may have to remove some of the sump webbing to do this.
FWIW, I've used a 1.8 flywheel on my 2.0 zetec, and a 1.8 Sierra starter.

I would imagine that the engine is a Duratech one, not a Zetec. Simple test, are the cams belt or chain driven?

I made a large error in my last post! I said the starter on the motor and the bell was on the right side. If the correct point of reference is the
front of the car looking rearward... the starter is on the left for both.
The motor has cam belts, the exhaust is on the right as per the above point of reference and the block is iron.
When holding the bell against the motor the two upper bell holes are maybe 35mm higher than the holes in the block.
Two holes on right line up as well as one on the left. Sole alignment pin near the bottom lines up with nothing and interferes with bell and motor
pulling together.
No holes in sump casting line up, though I can see that removing sump webbing may allow mountig the starter in the lower position.
To me it seems that our merkur bell and your siera bell are not the same Though I suppose it could be the blocks differ.
Any ideas?

Must be that the Lima blocks do not match the European blocks. I have a spare bellhousing but you are a long way away. I can price up delivery if you want.

That just might be the ticket but if you could get me an approximate measurment from the center of the bell (center of input shaft) to the upper holes
it would probably firm up that idea. If this appears to be the fix to my problem I would be happy to take you up on your kind offer (assuming shipping
isn't to bad)
and make it worth your while as well.

Is a Merkur XR4TI a V6 like the XR4i in this country. If so, as someone has already said, it has a different bolt pattern than the four cylinder
engines. I.e. the two top bolts are further up.

The distance between the shaft and the two top holes is 180mm or just over 7" and they are 130mm or just over 5" apart. If this is the size
you need I'll strip it off the box and get a price for the shipping.

Thanks for the information, so far all the dimensions look perfect! Could I ask you to get me one more dimension before you go to the trouble of
getting a shipping price? I read somewhere that the t9 had two input shaft lengths. Mine is about 193 mm from the end of the shaft to the flat face of
the gearbox without the bell.
That might be difficult to measure with the bell in place, but a guess should be good enough. If your shaft is the same as mine I think its a go,
otherwise I would have to source a different t9 as well.

Another late reply, the joys of the summer shut down period.
The shaft length on my box is approx 180mm.
Hi, the 2.3 Lima engine is different than the 2.0 Pinto. The OHC design is the same but none of the parts interchange including the bellhousing. The
only cars I know in the US with bellhousings that fit are from 1971-74 Ford Pintos and the Mercury(Ford) Capri.
