Hi guys. Ive made a boo boo
Driving around the other day, the engine started to sound funny, it sounded flatter like the exhaust was blowing. When i got home however, i
discovered that there was no oil showing on the dipstick. Ive just used 3 litres to top it back up to the middle of the stick.
So, im wondering how much oil a crossflow should have as standard (ie, how much did i have left?), and if its likely to need work to fix it! Not run
it yet, but im off out in it later.
Also, i get a lot of smoke out of the crankcase vent. Is this due to the twin 40s not being connected to the crankcase breather (at least, i dont
think they are!), or is it worn rings?
Any help much appreciated
Joel.
Do a compresion test
Mine has a shortened sump and holds 3 litres, it does smoke a bit through the crank breather but burns very little , I have found that even
overfilling a little causes, it to thow out oil and smoke more from the breather. If you have added 3 litres and the sump wasnt empty then it sounds as
if it may be overfull.

possible i suppose, ive just come in now, my feet were slipping on oil in the footwell and my right foot is splattered too!
by the way, i put the 3 litres in after it ran out, not before!
There are also big splodges of oil in the road outside, so theres definately something gone wrong recently. Im guessing its either the filter loose
(not likely) or the main seal by the flywheel. Have to investigate in daylight!
If yours only holds 3 litres, that probably means i had nothing left!

Joel,
Is your crankcase properly vented? You'll need either the original one-way valve system to the inlet manifold, or a catch tank.
If you don't have a proper vent then it'll chuck its oil out one way or another...
David
all it has is a tube on the drivers side, with a metal looking filter on it. No real catch tank though. Im off out for a closer look.
Cheers for
that david!
I was going to post about smoke out the crankcase breather. I have a one way valve on it, but its not connected to anything, i am looking at getting a
catch tank. There isnt much wrong with not using one is there? Except polluting the enviroment!
I also wondered how much smoke should come out? I guess its hard to quantify it, but i have visible smoke, not loads, but just about visible.
i had a little more than visible, though not pouring out
