Colortune on zetec
givemethebighammer - 21/9/05 at 10:23 PM

Anyone ever used a Gunsons colortune on a zetec engine. One of my carbs is running a little rich (sooted plug). Seems like the easiest way to tweak the idle mixture on that barrel. I'm just a bit concerned about the voltage of the HT leads (I understand the zetec runs a higher voltage than most). The deep recessed, long reach spark plug also seems like it could cause problems.

Got one

Doesn't fit.

Adapter is supposedly available but no-one seems to stock it.

I had a problem on a 16V Golf with one of the plugs sooting up. Car basically ran OK. I traced the fault to an air leak on the induction system. Being Bosch (jetronic???) it had to be perfectly sealed.

As an aside i also had an annoying fault that the car would run very well for a while then started to die off and splutter badly. Specialist couldnt trace fault. I even fitted brand new fuel pump then later found the guy who fitted the immobiliser spliced into the pump main feed wires instead of the relay feed and the pump was being starved of power.

a see-through spark plug basically

ive just borrowed a coulourtune kit off my Dad to help set up my 38DGAS on Pinto. Are they easy to use and accurate? Am i right in assuming that you simply replace a plug, fire up and observe the colour then tweak to adjust the colour??? Maybe im being sceptical but i would have thought removing a spark plug would cause engine to run strange?

The colortune acts as a sparkplug....you plug the HT lead into the top and it does the sparking instead of the removed plug

I have one somewhere , i used it years ago on my mgb but found it just as easy to adjust by ear .It only allows the idle mixture to be set correctly, so no real use in my opinion except maybe to help with the mot emission test.
