Gearbox shaft length for Zetec
donut - 23/9/05 at 02:38 PM

I have a 2 Litre Zetec engine and a type 9 sierra P100 Deisel pick up gearbox that i would like to use with said engine. I have been talking to Dunnells regarding kits that they do for rear wheel drive conversions and the chap said that i would have to make sure that the shaft was long enough to go into the engine from the gearbox. Apparently there are different sizes.

Question is, does anyone know how long the shaft needs to be or if my gearbox is any good or not. I see many people use MT75 box's which i would think would not be a problem.

Is a MT75 box the same overall length as a type 9? ( just thinking of prop length as the prop is for my type 9)

Cheers

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, but doesn't the P100 gearbox have a very low first gear - designed for setting off using a diesel engine and carrying heavy loads?

wouldn't this probably mean 0-15 mph very fast but then needing an upchange

just wondered if it might not be better to get a standard type 9 or even better one off a V6 with a taller than standard 1st gear which would be better suited to the locost (or MK) application. The V6 one has a longer input shaft.

I have a spare type 9 from a granada which I want rid of (and you are welcome to have it) but I am in Yorkshire which is not exactly next to you.

Oh you were asking about the input shaft sorry cant help with that

Cheers

Mark

Hi Mark

Yes you are correct regarding the gearing but i had the same on my old pinto Indy and it was GREAT in 2nd and 3rd, it really flew but yes 1st was very short.

Wondering if a MT75 would be the way to go.

MT75 is a very good gearbox, but it can't have it's ratios changed. That said I use a standard Sierra DOHC one. !st is a little low, 2nd gets you to 65, 3rd to 95...then it all gets a bit scarry so who cares. motorway driving in 5th is just fine with about 22mph per 1000rpm. with the zetec if you are taking it easy 40mph in 4th or 5th is not a problem. I think it's a good option for the zetec...as did westfield for a good few years.

Agreed. I just get frustrated with the shortness of 1st.
