i have a zetec 1.6 with a cracked head
should i look for a new head for it or just scrap it and get a 2ltr pinto i have a set of twin 40 delortos can anyone sugest what kind of output each
engine will produce
i am only after a comparison
cheers dave
The Zetec will be a bit lighter and more compact, but to use it with carbs (if that's what you have in mind) you will also need an ignition module,
different water pump probably and a different sump as well as a suitable inlet manifold. If it was a 2litre zetec then I would have thought it was
worth the hassle and cost (should be good for 165bhp) but as it's only a 1600 I would reckon the pinto would be a better bet although the power for
both might be around 130

Another point to consider is that the 40's will really be a bit to small on choke diameter for the 2.0 pinto, the run well on 45's but better 48's.
4WIWIMO drop the Zetec, Fit the pinto, sell the 40's & put the money from zetec & 40's towards a well set up pair of 45's or 48's.
Enjoy.
To fit zetec as rightly suggested you will need: ignition module (£ 350), inlet manifold (£100+), exhaust manifold ( westy £ 200 ish) , sump (remember
its ally £225 ish), cooling system mods depending upon installation details but probably not the waterpump on a 1.6L, flywheel (£95), Clutch (£100)
and the odds and sods. (you can shop around of course)
I went through the process of to zetec or not zetec with my pinto. (which i run on 34mm chokes in dellrto DHLA 40's, smaller chokes give more torque,
read drivability) I decided since neither was a proper sportcar engine the extra money for the zetec waas not worth it. The pinto provides a more
entertaining drive even if not the huge levels of power attainable by a modified 16v. Weight wise i guessed a 35 Kg saving for the zetec as an
istallation.
I did a bit of a hunt and figures for a standard zetec on twin carbs were about 155-165 for 2 litre, 155 for the 130spec 1.8 litre, 140 ish for the
common 1.8 litre and around 120-125 for a 1.6. For the standard injection pinto on twin carbs expect 100+ ( westy claim near to 130). Dont forget that
for the pinto you will need a modified dizzy.
Another thing to consider is that to get through an SVA you need to pass the emissions test. If the Zetec is post '95 this is practically impossible on carbs. I have heard that the 1.6 Zetec is not very tuneable either. As mentioned above, a 1.8 or 2.0 might be worth the hassle. We have ditched our 1.8 Zetec in favour of a bike engine.
