
Right.... there are some cheap Webber 40's up for grabs which i'm tempted to purchase. Would these be ok for a 2 litre std pinto or would it
really be worth while waiting for 45's to pop up. Is there any power increase with 40's or 45's on a std engine?

Id go for the 40's. Theyl be more than enough. The end of the day if you find they arnt right then you can always sell and get 45's.
I had a standard 2.0ltr pinto on 45's and it was over carbed. Coughed and spluttered and this appears to be the case on most engines that I
know.
40's should be more than enough as already said.

IIRC even for a well tuned (and I'm not talking silly tuning here) 2litre pinto, the chokes to fit are 38mm. Which will just fit into 40's.
So you should have no trouble with 40's unless you want stupid power.
I just got myself a 38DGAS Carb (all of £40 with a K&N and inlet manifold). Its another option for a good power boost from the standard carb
(cheap too)

got to buy 4 of everything.
And i managed to not mention bike carbs.........oh poo!!! 
I think you will find the biggest venturis for a DCO40 are 36mm and these do not really provide a good venturi effect. 34mm should really be seen as
the biggest venturi for a DCO40 carb.

I think 40's are ok for a standard engine (just) but if you are ever going to go for more power you would be better off with 45's.
As Mr Britishtrident says the venturi (choke) size is actually the critical thing
I bought a set of cheap 40's and had to sell tham again as they would have cost a fortune in new chokes and jets etc - it was cheaper to get some
45's in the long run.
However having said all that, If I was doing it now, I would forget Webers and have bike carbs or throttle bodies + megasquirt instead anyway
