Expansion tank question
givemethebighammer - 23/10/05 at 08:05 PM

Can you get an expansion tank with just one inlet ? If so from which vehicle. I run a water rail on my zetec that has an overflow pipe that just dumps the water as the engine heats up and the system finds it's own level (raceline say this is how it should be). However after a good thrash (such as a track day) I have to top the coolant up with up to a litre of water. My thinking is that I could replace the cap on the water rail with a non pressure release version, run the overflow pipe to an expansion tank that has a pressure release cap fitted to it (hence the single inlet tank question) and no more lost coolant.

cant help you there, but on my car, i did a trackday with no header or expansion tank, and no fan working, and it worked well for many laps. Admittedly it wasnt exactly a hot day!

thanks Joel, it works fine even on a hot day, it's just a pain to have to keep topping the system up. Bit worried about losing the antifreeze as well.

classic range rover, SD1 have small copper tanks with a 1/4" pipe to feed them and standard rad cap.

they are the special builders friend are those Rover tanks!

You can make up extra brass hose barbs and drill the tank and solder them in wherever you like, really cheap solution that looks tidy too!

Don't know if you still need an expansion tank but I have 2 spare:

1 pressurised from a Metro (but it has 3 connectors!)

1 non-pressurised with only 1 connector

most jap motors have a small top-up tank for the cooling system.. one pipe to the top of the rad.. a one-way valve in line or normally built into the cap on the reservoir so the cooling system can still pressurise.. and will draw coolant into the system if it needs it.

any nissan micra has one with a valve built into the cap, they hold about half a litre.. prob cost u a fiver from any scrapyard.

dunno if that helps

Be warned of diesel range rovers and SD1's their expansion tanks have 2 connections to the cooling system (bottom hose and top of rad/block).
Still made from tin so can be soldered/brazed if needs be (block up top hole by brazing).

thanks people found this today

seems that the Jap thing is the way to go

K11 Micra, small tank with single inlet at the bottom.

However if I find a range rover I might be tempted !

thanks again

Another common tank with 1 small OD outlet (just read the westy forum bit and it seems you're not the only one with the problem!) is the renault one fitted to most 80's renaults, fairly neat too, round bottle with a single outlet in the base, may even have one laying about, I'll have a look tomorrow evening for you as you're not far away to pick it up!
