Focus Gear selector problem
Deckman001 - 5/12/05 at 09:11 PM

Anyone out there experienced a similar problem with a focus ?? The gear stick now does not 'spring' back to centre from 1st/2nd position , but still does from 5th/reverse ??? is it a 'box' problem or just a linkage prob ???

Get under the bonnet and have a look. Niece's Saxo lost all its gears and that was a £10 link with 2 joints on it. took 10 minutes to fix, you've probably lost a spring if all the gears still work.

Sounds like a spring gone. IIRC some Focus's are cable shift so the spring may be in the gearbox itself.

You can just replace the spring rather than the whole gear lever / linkage

£3 and some pence from a Ford parts desk, if you describe the problem to them they'll know which spring you need as it's a pretty common problem.

Take a look at how the spring fits before you disassemble it, I tried to when I did mine but it all flew apart and then I spent a while figuring out how it was actually meant to fit.

Will try this method first, thanks, Have also been told it's a prob with the box and it's an engine out job,,, hope it's the spring !!

Not sure it's an engine out job to get box out at least it wasn't on the only one I've done. Can't help with the spring though it may be worth getting your local parts department to print out the gear lever page if they will . Probably clearer to see how things go than a manual .
