Anyone out there experienced a similar problem with a focus ?? The gear stick now does not 'spring' back to centre from 1st/2nd position ,
but still does from 5th/reverse ??? is it a 'box' problem or just a linkage prob ???

Jason
Get under the bonnet and have a look. Niece's Saxo lost all its gears and that was a £10 link with 2 joints on it. took 10 minutes to fix, you've probably lost a spring if all the gears still work.
Cheers pete will have a look next time i get to see it during the day light hours
Jason
Sounds like a spring gone. IIRC some Focus's are cable shift so the spring may be in the gearbox itself.

hi
had exactly same problem found to be a broken spring at bottom of gear lever replaced gear lever and linkage as it is all one hope this helps
Just what i wanted to hear
Jason
You can just replace the spring rather than the whole gear lever / linkage
£3 and some pence from a Ford parts desk, if you describe the problem to them they'll know which spring you need as it's a pretty common
problem.
Take a look at how the spring fits before you disassemble it, I tried to when I did mine but it all flew apart and then I spent a while figuring out
how it was actually meant to fit.
Will try this method first, thanks, Have also been told it's a prob with the box and it's an engine out job,,, hope it's the spring !!
Jason
Not sure it's an engine out job to get box out at least it wasn't on the only one I've done. Can't help with the spring though it may be worth getting your local parts department to print out the gear lever page if they will . Probably clearer to see how things go than a manual .
Problem sorted
T'was the spring !! wehay
£3 ish and 20 mins in the car to work out where the spring should have fitted before it broke !!
Thanks to 'Flat pack' for the web link
