I am looking at LT77 'boxes on eBay, to mate to RV8.

It looks like there is a difference between LT77s, some have some sort of transfer box drive and another gearstick.

Am I right, and if so what am I looking for for a wide locost application.

THe LT77 box was also used in the range rover for 4wheel drive hence the other gearstick.
The ones from the sherpa have a diffrent ratio,'s in them but I don't know what they are.

Not sure where you are but I have a couple I no longer need but they don't have bellhousngs. or gearchanges.

The bellhousings seem to go for a fair bit on eBay.

Are yours Sherpa boxes and do they mte to RV8?

Those Sherpa boxes are from a 2.5 litre diesel engined truck. Some sherpas were fitted with rover V8,s ambulances etc..

Okay this is not all bad though, V8 gearbox has a long bell housing, however using one of these with a Landrover V8 series III adaptor plate and a smaller clutch you can bolt it all together.

When trialing landrovers this is a prefered route as space is restricted in a 80" wheelbase landrover so is tried and trusted on 3.5 litre engines.

That said for the amount of effort on a Locost I would go the modifed Ford gearbox route, its much lighter.

Not the most reliable gearbox used in the LDV 2.5 diesels, they eventually gave in and started fitting the Transit MT75 boxes. The original LT77 perfectly matched the Peugeot 2.5d engine though, they were both unreliable and expensive to fix.

I wish I had used a Ford type 9 or Mt75 with convertor plate on my RV8.

Probably more reliable than a LT77, and cheaper, if you dont count the cost of the conversion plate.
Also a lot more abundant!, you can get spare boxes easily. Finding a good LT77 is difficult, and one in good condition is not a common event.

Still I will use the 77 until it packs up.
