I want to fill up my Type 9 gearbox with oil, but looking in Haynes for the capacity, it turns out that a pre '87 box needs 1,9 litres, and a
post '87 box needs just 1,25 litres.
How can I tell which one I have? It is mounted in the chassis, with tunnel firmly riveted in place, so I don't have to oportunity to look at
number on the casing.......

pour in oil via the side filler (not sure how you'll access it in your car) until it doesn't go in any more. its now corectly filled.
(i think)
Yep - fill until it pours back out the hole on the side.
Pat...
Thought so.......
I'll give it a go, and I'll be using the same method as I used to fill my diff. It's pretty hard to reach the filling hole! (I did
already manage to open it though, unlike the diff plug: I filled it through the breather hole on top)
Thanks.

Maybe you should go on Blatchat and show them the way.You would be Einstein in that company....
That was a bit harsh Ray. Don't tar everyone with the same brush.

Have a look at this site, shows how to identify early and late boxes.

I thought it should be 5mm belowe the fill hole ( vague memory from yeas ago )
But it's not going to kill the box if you over fill..
TT
Yes, there are two different levels "below the level plug hole" given, but it only improves 5th gear lubrication if you fill up to the level hole, just might breath a bit more oil out through the vent in the top of the box thats all.
They lowered the level because the oils seals were weeping oil if the box was even slightly over filled --- easy to do with a garage bulk lube gun.
If you can take the plug out and just touch the oil level with your little finger there is enough oil.
