Having started my build, I'm at the point where I had planned to drop the engine in for the first time (Std 5JJ R1).

The only mod I am really aware of is to add the sump baffel, but are there any other modifications advisable or required, to put the R1 lump in?

Does anyone know any good web sites that have details on the mods (i'm a bike engine novice, only ever worked on Crossflow's and Pinto's)

Keep the tips coming, especially anything to do with the loom!!

Hi Steve. If I remember correctly. there wasnt much to worry about with the later model engines. The 98 era motors had recalls for clutches and a couple of other odds and sods which I cant remember. The 2000 model got a stronger clutch and a different 1st gear I found out too.

All being well, Ill be collecting my Vortx in Feb so will be about 6 months behind you. All I intend to do is tidy the engine if it needs it, change the oil and plugs and thats about it. It will be hard to resist the temptation to fiddle but having riden a 98 R1 theres not a lot they need

While the motor is on the bench add a second clutch spring. 10 minute job.

Ooh yeh, meant to say that. Two options, fit a second standard diaphragm spring (supposed to be fairly good) or swap for a Barnett conversion (circa hundred quid, but very good).

Apparently makes the clutch a lot more user friendly for a car setup.

I think I will go for 1 second diaphragm spring to begin with and see how it goes.

as above fit another clutch spring

its more like a big cup washer in the r1's

important dont forget to fit a new clutch gasket when you take the cover off

and TOP THE OIL UP AN extra 250ml

otherwise you may encounter bad oil problems
