Fan switch. What temp?
donut - 8/1/06 at 05:29 PM

Need to get a fan switch for my Polo rad and was wondering what temp one to get. Engine is a 2 litre pinto unmodded.

What temperatures do they do? It needs to be higher than your thermostat or it will cool the water before the engine is up to temperature. I think the thermostat in my pinto is a 98* one. I have my fan on a switch and watch the gauge and I rarely need it. (apart from when I didn't check the level and it boiled up )

To an extent it depends what pressure cap and what thermostat are you using and exactly where the switch is located.

Normally for the UK climate I would expect a rad fan to cut in 95 c. and cut out at 85c

At 6 psi above atmospheric pressure water boils at 110c
Normal road car water thermostats are in the range 81 to 88 degrees.

I couldn't get a stat in my Polo rad to work properly (prob. due to running it backwards) so I blanked the hole with an old stat.

I then fitted a Pacet hose adapter for 22mm stats in the top hose with a 93/88 stat. The fan now keeps the temp around 95.

The temp drops quite a lot by the time the water is at the polo stat so you need a much lower cut in temp than you think you need.

Intermotor part #s and their temps:-

First number is cut in the second is cut out.

3 pin (i.e. 2 stats in one):-
93/88 & 97/9? #50102 (this is what I have)

2 pin:-
92/87 #50200
90/80 #50240
82/67 #50100
87/77 #50120
85/75 #50250
85/80 #50090

Pinto thermostat should open at 88 so make sure your fan cuts off before it cools that low.

Also make sure your thermostat works as they oftern stick open. Once up to temp it shouldn't go below below about 85 ever. If it does then then replace the stat. Running too cool uses more fuel and reduces power.

I'm using a Polo rad and got (IIRC) an 82 deg thermo from a Sierra cosworth.
