Type 9 gearbox speedo drive

Can anybody tell me what I need to do to "block off" the type 9 std speedo drive when not connecting a cable to it.

Does oil come out if I just leave it open? Didn't seem to , and the oil seal is obviusly still in place but just wondered if anything could come out of the square hole where the cable normally pushes in?

I removed the seal, the speedo gear and shaft from mine as it was a bit leaky.

Then put in a suitable nut and bolt with large washers and instant gasket to seal it all up.

Can'y quite remember as it is a while ago now but I think there is a core plug to take out to do this but it wasn't a problem and I have no leaks (from there anyway)

Cheers

istr the hole in nylon spedo drive gear is blind --- I had one out to count the teeth about 6 years back.

Core plug at other side is easy enough to (carefully) remove and replace, take it out the gear drops straight out and you could blank the other end with a plug.

i cut the steel flared bit off the end of the cable, filled the hole with PU, then put it back in with the circlip. it seemed easier than taking all the gear out.
