Hi

Is it possible to couple a MGB overdrive gear box to a 1987 Audi 80 1800 engine?

anythings possible... This must be the weirdest combo I've ever heard though.

Don't know - but the MGB box is big -- very big in overdrive form but it has been fitted into a Locost chassis. For mating it to other engines the trouble is the B box has a cast in bellhousing so the adpator would have to be a plate type.

I know Golf engines can be mated to type 9s at using a bellhousing.

Or if you wanted to use the MGB gearbox -- the Rover 2 litre Twin Cam M16/T16 or single cam O series can be mated to it.

I may be possible to use the rear engine plate from a B series engine by redrilling the plate to suit the Audi engine. The plate has an acurately centred hole for the rear oil seal which could be used to help with the alignment. I considered this to fit an Alfa twincam to an MGB box but never got around to doing it.

I can understand the logic
The MG box is actually quite a nice strong box and the ratios ain't bad, gear change is excellent --- overdrive 3rd is a very handy when waiting to pass traffic -- slip into OD 3rd find a gap then just flick of switch needed to go down to 3rd --- just like kick down on an autobox but instant.

--- quite a lot of B boxes around from 5 speed conversions.

knew nothing about them, imagined that they'd be old, tired and not very strong.

Why would you put a five speed conversion in if you've got overdrive on 3rd and 4th?

Overdrives tend to stop working, mainly due to neglect, and to have them overhauled is expensive.

I like driving my dads's 'B. The overdrive is really quite a uselfull toy, but I can confirm that the gearboxes are very heavy after helping him take it out a while back.
