hi, i have purchased a zetec to fit into my saab, i haven't seen it yet as i am away at uni at the mo, my dad aquired it for me. i have read in articles that u need to change the starter motor, is this because it will foul on something such as the gearbox? its being mounted to a saab gearbox so it may clear it, but if it doesn't clear a type 9 it won' clear the saab one i guess, can anyone confirm this is why i can't use the starter motor? also is the orginal alternator too powerful? its a 70 amp one on the zetec while the saabs orginal is about 40, will this be a problem? or does the eletrical systems of the car take what current they need not what they are given? sorry if these are silly questions, haven't been doing this for very long! cheers
Hi.
The starter motor mounts onto the gearbox not engine. The bolt pattern of the zetec starter motor doesn't match that of the Type nine.
99% of people on this this forum have never even seen a Saab 96 never mind know intimately what is under the bonnet and how to mate it to a Zetec. We
try to help with most problems that kit and special builders encounter but we don't have crystal balls.
Any FWD Ford starter is unlikely to fit because of the bolt pattern a Sierra or Cortina starter might.
The Saab 96 used a v4 petrol engine out of the corsair, tansit Zepher, fixed to a Saab gearbox. Now IIRC the bellhousing on that was very differant to
the one on the Zetec. Anything is possible but unless the type 9 bellhousing fits onto the Saab gearbox you may have problems. If it does fit then the
1.8cvh sierra starter is the one you want with an 1.8 mondeo flywheel if it is a 2.0ltr you are fitting.
If it fits this will make it fly as they were quite quick for their day
Didn't the Saab use the Taunus version of the V4 which had several differences to the British version? it's been a long time since I last saw one . From what I can make out when fitting the Zetec engine to a type nine some starters require the sump relieving for clearance ? . This may be the case for your car? I think one of the starters used is the CVH Sierra unit.
I was the Colonge unit (no great but much better than the Essex) ---- and column gear change -- the consequence of getting the wrong gear going down
the box in a hury with Zetec could be expensive.
Memories I used to fancy an older woman who had a yellow m reg one (Saab v4 that is) wonderful sexy shape (her not the car).
The car wasn't bad either?
I cant be sure but maybe a forum like this one might be more help.

Or one of the many ford/zetec forums out there

don't i count as i special builder? i was aware that its unlikely that anyone knows about a saab 96 internals and wether u can fit a zetec to its
gearbox, but there was still a chance! am abit confused about the starter motor, if it mounts to the gearbox orginally what does the sierra one mount
too? or is there a mount already there? i have the feeling that at best the gearbox will not fir precisely, if i am lucky i will only have to move
some bolt holes slightly! thanks for the clarification guys!
P.S. oh yeah the guy who mentioned that i could make an expensive mistake with a steering column gear change may be right. but with the saab gearbox
comes a freewheel. u can down shift with out touching the clutch! and upshift if u have the knack apparently!
Most British fords use the same bell housing pattern, as yours is Ford based angine and box you may be lucky if you can get the right clutch to fit the engine and the box . I suspect you may have to relieve the ally sump to get clearance for the starter or at the worst change or modify the bell housing. Sounds like an interesting idea though BOL
