We went to have a play about in car today and once it was out of garage we started it up to drive it but once the engine was under load it just died and alot of grey smoke came out of the carb what could cause this????

First thing is line up the timing marks and check the cam belt hasn't lost teeth.

Would that cause it to die only once you lift the clutch it will sit and rev for hours if left but once it goes to move the car it gives up

Sounds like the carb's gobbed. Clean the jets out and try again, does it rev when you choke it?

its a automatic choke but the engine revs ok

Sounds like it could be either ignition, or valve timing to me. If either of these are out you can get the engine to rev, but as soon as you apply load it will just die. I would check the timing before doing anything else.

Sounds like the main jet is gummed up to me. Has it been stood at all?

The engine has been lying for a while and only run very occassionally. Would carb cleaner do or do I need to strip it down.
