Im looking to paint my engine up so it looks nice. Whats the best paint to use? High temp stuff or normal enamel? Just to paint the block and cam cover BTW.

You can get engine paint from a local automotive paints supplier. A pint is enough to give a single coat (usually all you need) to an engine block. Should cost you £4-£5.

It will be loads cheaper to go to a local automotive paints place than Frosts or most places on the net... (e.g. I pay £6/litre for chassis black, Frosts is about £15 IIRC!)

When doing engine's calipers, etc i use VHT grey to prime then hammerite spray as it gives a glossy smooth finish.

Little pot of ceramic paint from B&Q.

Comes in a million colours.

You'll only need one tin.

Toughens with heat.

Always done everything in this - calipers, block etc. with no problems or peeling/flaking.

It even comes in chrome.

tin of black from halfords even, about 4 quid so far done the best part of my entire engine and still loads left!

I used smoothrite

Smoothrite is really versatile for engine blocks, calipers etc. It takes a lot of heat and looks professional too. The trick is to brush the first coat and spray the second - any brushmarks dissappear and you get a good thick coat.

B & Q in slough tell me that they don't stock the ceramic pain any more. Not sure if this is a national situation or just local

The BEST engine paint I have found so far is industrial floor paint, of all things!!

The grey stuff looks great on blocks etc, is super tough, heat resistant, resists stone chips etc etc.

Really good stuff. I have a big tin that gets used every time I put an engine together, done 7 so far I think and the level in the tin hasn't really moved!!

I have a tin of that at work. Maybe ill borrow some. That will fit in with my LOcost theme.
