Seeing as the Pinto has a smaller capacity sump, how much oil should I put in the engine? Is it the recomended amount or a little under?
Ta
Fill to max on dip stick? measure amount as you fill for future reference
The thing that confuses me (not difficult!!) is the fact that with a smaller sump there will be less oil in the engine but it will still show as full on the dipstick. Putting too much oil can do damage so knowing whats right is difficult.
Thats why some modified sumps have wings , baffles etc to restore original capacity and keep oil at the pick up point to combat surge. If the sump has just been chopped a small amount only then just top up to max and no more , change / top up oil more often If sump has had huge amounts chopped off then wings etc are probably needed. Sure there are other folk with other ideas but that is how I see it . HTH
Mine has no extra bit!. According to the Haynes book of lies in need 3.75 litres of oil. I'll put that in and see where it gets to.
why don't u put in 3.5 say and see how it runs then put more and more in till its right just don't run for too long incase

How much oil did you put in the 1st Indy that " YOU " built ?
Just as a reminder for you it was blue and had a pinto in it

Don't overfill , oil can be aireated? (not sure of spelling) by crank whipping it up . Can cause serious engine damage
Bob, you know i have the memory of a goldfish! I really can't remember
Must be cos i'm getting old!
I'll put in 3.75 litres ans see if it blows up.
Donut,
I like how you say its got a modded sump but dont say how etc
A clue would be nice.....LOL.
Ive filled mine to bottom of dipstick. Sump modded very similar to Mark Allansons instruction sheet. Under heavy braking i get oil pressure alarm on
DD2. 2 reasons for this - 1. ive set the alarm point wrong, or 2. it could do with some more oil in it. Ill now add a bit more and repeat test.
As a blatant hijack - what grade oil do people use? Ive used 5W30 for now. Sump is baffled (not as much as me usually!!!!!). Would thicker oil stay
put more?
I'm usung 15/40 castrol GTX mainly because i could get it cheap and also because it suits the older engines, not sure about 5/30 thats what i put
in my zetec daily driver.
I'm sure one of the tech minded clever bods will put us straight on which oil we should use, well i hope so anyway
Darren
The sump was modded by Mac1 so untill i call them i have no idea.
dont put 3.75 in! If its been chopped, that will over fill it. Id put 3 in and leave for 5 mins, when it settles that should definately show on the stick. Then top it to 3/4 full.
