Carb problem
donut - 12/2/06 at 03:21 PM

Ok i have a crap carb on my car and i want to change it for a new one (32DGAV i think) The problem is that the plate that moves the carb opener is completely wrong for the new carb and inlet mani setup. In the pic A represents the old carb plate. When you put your foot on the accelorator the cable pulls the lever thingy towards you (as you woul look at it in the pic) Thus opening the throttle.

The new one (big pic) is at a different position to the old so i can't use the old plate. Has anyone got the correct plate?

On this carb the throttle opperates in the opposite direction to my old one so in effect i would have to push the lever thingy away to open the trottle and i can't see how i'm going to get it to work.

Please help.

The carb needs turning 180 degrees. If the choke was there it would hiut the rocker cover like thay anyway I think. There is a different linkage that bolts to the hole on the other end of the manifold for the DGAVs.

P.S. sorry, I don't have one

Aha! so has anyone got this linkage?

that carb is a 3.0 carb

You're right there Dez but they also put it on the RS2000 i think. This one is jetted for a 2 litre.

Andy

dont turn it 180degs its fine like that, you can make some adjustments to the throttle linkage you have.

all the rs2000 carbs ive seen the second choke comes in half way through the first choke, that one they both come in together.

I think it has been modified to do that Dez.

That carb is a 38DGAS from a 3L carpi or scimitar. (I believe they were also fitted as an option/upgrade to the RS2000, as thats where mine came from) You can tell by the gears linking the two throttle butterflys, meaning they both open at the same time that its a 38DGAS.

There are some pics of mine here (mine has a manual choke though): Linky

That carb is good for upto 140-150bhp.

Oh and it is the right way around on the manifold as well.

Looks like i'm going to have to make my own plate That should be a larf!!

Oh, another thought, the type of the carb is stamped onto the base next to the idle asjustment screw, on the choke mechanism side of the carb.

It should say 38DGAS or 38DGMS (looks like yours used to be a DGMS to me...

Its worth checking though, as it could be a DGAV which has been modified. If so, its not worth bothering with, get yourself a DGMS

But i have only just bought it

I hate kit cars!!!

It looks like a 38DGAS from the pic - same as mine.

I modded a throttle cable linkage bracket for mine (crap description) - see my archive.

The bar that had the ball ended bits points up on the old cab. IIRC you need it to point down. I managed this by twisting mine thro approx 180deg in the vice obviously keeping the bar as straight as poss. It will snap i hear you say........ well mine didnt and works great.
You will see in pics that i had to modify the bracket to get cable to work well. 38DGAS seems to have a shorted pull to get full throttle opening. It was a bit trial and error but not difficult.

I noticed when i got my 38DGAS the butterfly qhadrants were on the wrong side (faced front of car) - i mounted my carb 180 deg round so that it was facing bulkhead. I dont know whaich way round is correct but carb works fine. Mine has no auto choke fitted, maybe that give clearance for rocker cover. Again cold starts have been no problem at all.

Just had closer look. Not same as mine. Idle mixture screw is at an angle on yours Donut. Mine is straight in - one for each choke.

I'll have a look at your archive.
