Lamba sensor location
piddy - 25/2/06 at 07:46 PM

I today removed the lamba sensor boss from my exhaust. ( was on top of the exhaust)

I intend to weld it on the bottom of the exhaust. Is this ok.
Where should it be located along the pipe?
On the collector, or on the pipe after the collector or doesn't it matter.

Closer to the head the faster it will warm up not so vital for 3 or 4 wire heated sensors --- should also be at a point where gases from all 4 cylinders pass over it.

The bottom is not a good place as any moisture in the exhaust gases may collect at the bottom of the pipe and damage the sensor. You want to mount it between 3 and 9 o'clock on the pipe fairly close to the engine (especially important when using sensors that don't have heaters built in) and where it is sampling the gases from all of the cars cylinders. I have mine in the top of the collector just after where the primaries merge into the main pipe.

kind of related.....

Whats the smallest sensor anybodys found?

I'd like to try and hide ours on the back side of the collector in the gap imbetween that and the car so its not spoiling the look of our lovely shiney exhaust.

Could do with one that has the connector on a right angle or something ideally I imagine.

They are all 18mm spark plug size -- never seen any with right angle connectors I suspect the wires have to be kep clear of the exhaust heat.

the Genda site has a lot of info

I need to make a threaded insert to fit one to my exhaust, can anyone tell me the length of the threaded portion? .Do they seat against a flat face ?.I want to make a top hat bush and assume i must make sure that there is no protruding threads in the exhaust.

sensor position should be just after the header(where 2 or 4 pipes become 1), top of the pipe to avoid problems with condensation etc, and the boss should be 14mm thick, a 4 wire(heated) sensor is better as they don't function until heated to 350 - 400 deg C.

Mines on the cat converter at 9 o'clock position. Im using a Tiger cat converter by the way so it might not be correct.
