Space between gearbox and chassis....
chrsgrain - 4/3/06 at 01:23 PM

Hi all,

running a XE engine with an omega gearbox, all in and happy - but the gearbox is very close to the chassis in a few places, and touching in one.... I need to grind down the bits, but only want to as much as I have to...

What's the consensus about how much clearance I'll need to give room for movement??

Thanks

Chris

Mine is about 10mm at the closest point, my gearbox mounts are very firm though and I've had no problems. Suspect 5-6mm would be the least you can go without contact when the eng/box twist.

Solid mount the engine to give less movement?

Glad someone just asked this - my box is very close to tunnel rails too, and I've already ground off some of the ali side fins to clear.

I went out and got hard Nismo racing mounts to reduce movement - worth finding out if you can get them for your engine.

I recon I'm around 5-8 min clear now, so hopefully ok...

Thanks all,

time to go grinding!

Mine's less than 5mm in places. It just gives the occasional 'clonk' (very occasional).

Don't harm anything and stops the mounts being overstretched

I keep referring to the old Sylva, but it's relevant again.

We had a similar problem to that involving clearance between the engine /box and a chassis rail. We got around it by incorporating an engine mount which went into tension under braking and caused ther engine to move away from the offending chassis member if at all. The mount was essentially redundant the rest of the time.
This was entirely succesfull.

Ditto - my bellhousing is very close to my pedal box.
