Leaking Type 9 Gearbox.
Ian Pearson - 16/3/03 at 09:46 AM

Any of you rebuilt a Type 9? My gearbox loses serious qaunities of oil where the splined output shaft exits at the rea of the box. I'm not sure what seals could should be replaced. Any help/ info etc would be much appreciated.

Many thanks, Ian.

Its usually the seal at the rear, the input shaft of the propshaft basically bungs up the rear of the box and the rear seal prevents the oil leaking - as the prop turns (mine doesn't do that yet!), it wears the seal. It is a simple pull out and press in with a large socket. Cheap and simple

Thanks Mark,

I'd presumed it wasn't going to be that easy! I'll give it a try.

Cheers, Ian

Mark, is not that simple once the side panels are done and the axle is in place .. .

I have just fitted the engine, so I guess it would be a false economy not to change the seal now.

For the price of a seal and 5 mins work, I think I will pop one in as well (it had not crossed my mind, perhaps we should have a "1001 things to remember before you bolt it all in" thread!)

I changed mine for the cost of a few Pounds. Mind you, the old one was ragged!

Replaced the seal today, hoisted engine/gearbox combo in the air, stood gassing for 5 mins. Result: oil everywhere!! It seems that the seal I replaced seals around the drive shaft!! Komplicated stuff this mekaniking!!

Yep, the prop input shaft acts like a bung!!
