what is a radiator header tank used for?

NS Dev - 16/3/06 at 03:32 PM

To keep a "head" of water in the system and to bleed air out of it. Basically connect any areas of the engine where air can get trapped in the waterways (usually thermostat housing area) to the bleed connections at the top of the tank, and the bottom connection into one of the main water pipes between the engine and the rad or heater.

The system is then kept completely full and free of air pockets.

Old systems in simple rwd cars just used the radiator top tank for this, but modern cars with smaller radiators which are lower than the engine need a header tank.
