Well I went to see the first GSI (G reg)on the list.The engine is mega caked with heavy rust but internally it is well clean looking. It's got the gearbox separated and hanging on the clutch, and the driveshafts and bottom ball joints off, with the wheels at crazy angles making it impossible to move or trailer without a forking lift
Car 2 tommorrow is a K plate SRI, with an earlier engine replacement, hopefully a X20XE and not a C20XE. It has not had the engine no on the v5 changed so is this a prob for an age related plate? the car does have a cat but the earlier engine might not need it but what about sva? It's a bit cheaper as well and a runner allegedly. I can't change the engine no on the v5 if its a X20xe (can I)?
What TF do I do I don't want a CAT but I would quite like an aged plate (not essential though) and I'd still need to prove the engine agecos the V5 would be wrong.

Hi, i would just worrie about picking up a good engine first, there are always ways around the engine number problem best of luck

no problem having a c20xe if you cant read it logbook anyone??

I've got a C20XE with no CAT,

think its from a 92 Calibra i.e the early half of the year, or the year before CATs were compulsary.

I'm presuming your after the earlier engine (20XE) because there more likely to have the cos-cast non porus head?.

ecotec engine code is X20XEV not X20XE

My C20XE is from an H plate 16vGTE with no cat

Oh Yes it's here its an xe with a J suffix And it's a bit rattly (tappets) And its mine and it was cheap and even if it needs a complete rebuild I'm still a happy man
So a heap of bit's will appear on fleabay now.
By the way is it possible it would have an oil cooler? it certainly has a couple of pipes running from the pump to the front of the car.
I still know of 2 cars in the north east of scotland with xe's in them if anyone wants a phone no then U2U me.

Oh and it's got an ally sump on it???????????

Yep it will have a cooler on it as std, but you don't really need one in the 7, I'm not using one.

If you struggle on the engine number etc drop me a line, I can solve that problem very easily for you

I also have a shedload of tappets, so if a cleanout doesn't work on yours (usually does) I can post you a few.

Cheers NSDEV I'll probably be a while before I get to the engine rebuild stage But if anything becomes apparent you'l be my first port of call thanks for just now. The engines out and power washed, and it's a coscast head as well.The whole car cost £170, and some stuff for ebay should balance out the costs more. Oh and I won £85 on the lottery so all in all a good week for locosts in my area.

Back from practice and the BIL didn't turn up till later so I had to take the car on track to scrub the tyres in. It's the first time I've driven the car with the xe in it and at around 700kg it is mega impressive of the line. Can't wait to see how one goes in a locost

£170 is a total bargain as well, it's worth more than that in engine parts alone (head's worth that to be honest!)
