Especially the CVH jobbies?
I believe that all sierras up to about 1988 were fitted with the T9. After that they switched to the MT75.
The only other box used in the sierra was the Type E and that was 4 speed.
Should be easy enough to tell if you stick your head under and have a look?

easiest way to spot is reverse on Mt75 is on the opposite side to type9.

only asking as i have had an email from a confused chap looking for a donor and i wasn't 100% sure if ALL Sierras had type 9.
Remember - the MT75 has a ribbed case. That's another easy way to spot one amongst the grot of the scrappy.
Also bear in mind that not all type 9 boxes have the lighter removable bellhousing. Some have the pig iron integral one which ways a metric
sh£$load.

All CVH sierras had type9 boxes
isnt it only the 2l dohc and the later 4x4 that have mt75 box?
Is there any significant reason why a type 9 is superior to the mt75? I've heard that the mt75 is slightly larger, why is this a problem?
I'd expect that, being the newer type it should be better...?

MT75 is, as you say, bigger so the transmission tunnel will need to be made wider leaving less space for your feet/pedals.
It also has an integral bellhousing so isn't as easy to use for non-ford engines.
According to burton it was fitted to the following:
• Sierra 2wd 12/88 on
• Granada 2wd 12/88 on
• Sierra 2.9 XR4x4
• Sapphire/Escort Cosworth 4wd
• Granada 2.9 4x4
So if i was to use a sierra as the donor, would i need to find one made prior to 1988 in order to make sure i get the type 9 with it? But would there be a problem with an engine/other parts of this age?
The MT75 will fit the Pinto, Zetec and CVH engines which are probably amongst the three most commonly used donor engines. It is a stronger gearbox than the Type 9, so if you can mak the room in the transmission tunnel then by all means use it. If you want to use a non-Ford engine then the Type 9 is generaly a better bet.
