Now that I have got my engine running to an acceptable standard I have a bit of a problem.
When the engine is idling at about 800-900 rpm there is a fairly loud rumbling/ clanking noise. If I increase the revs to about 1000-1100 it goes. It
also goes when I dip the clutch.
I'm thinking gearbox input shaft bearing.
What are peoples thoughts?
It's a standard type 9 box.
What type of bearing is supporting the input shaft? radial ball? single row/double row? pre-loaded?
Anyone got an assembly drawing of type 9?

got oil in t box? remember you have no sound deadening around the engine/box,you will hear all manner of strange noises
Maybe too much free play in the cable? If there is more than about 1/8", it may well be that, try first?

You have got a spigot bearing fitted in the end of the crank ?
Thanks Fozzie, that was my first thought (and RazMans who lives just round the corner) so I spent all morning fiddling (in the nicest possible way)

Dry spigot? or.....1st motion shaft?
This is beginning to look like a slight set-back

Not sure whether to strip it out and investigate or run it till it does something nasty
The engineer in me is winning at the moment and I think I'm going to have to investigate.

May just be that the oil hasnt got round the box yet to take up any play?
Hmm I had a similar noise in an old sierra - years ago - as soon as clutch dipped it went.
Turned out it was clutch release bearing or something like that.
I'd actually do what Danozeman says - take it for a thrash and see if it settles in :p
funnily enough I had the same in my old XR4x4, and that was the clutch release bearing carrier rattling on the trumpet housiing on the front of the box. The lightest pressure on the clutch pedal stopped it.
that sounds like the clutch release bearing or something in that area. my car is currently making that sort of noise.
ie it goes when u increase revs or dip the clutch. my dad is certian that it is this and i will be investigating when i take the v4 out to trial fit
the zetec i am trying to shoehorn in.
i would drive it for a bit first to see if it does improve as it shouldn't cause any damage. however it will need sorting fairly soon.

All the fords I have ever driven (about 4 in total) have had noisy clutch release bearings and most of them havent been more than 7 years old. Its
most likely to be that. If it is then really light pressure on the clutch pedal will stop it.

Mine does a similar thing if I let the revs drop too low, with 800-9000rpm its fine. Drive it and let it warm up and see what happens. Whats the worse that happen?
