Fuel sender mounting options.

Good afternoon all,

I;ve just bought a landrover fuel sender from a chap on Ebay, and I am just wondering about mounting it in my aluminium fuel tank. I'm told that it needs a 48mm hole drilling, and 6 mounting holes to line up with those on the flange of the sender.

However, I'm a bit unsure of how to hold it in place. The tank looks like it is made from around 3mm ally, so I'm not too sure about the strength of a tapped hole in the tank. THe other option is some flus mounting rivnuts, although again, the 3mm thick material and countersink required would probably compromise the strength of the fixing. The other option is good old self tapping screws.

Has anyone got any other options that might be suitable, or opinions on which of the three above would be best? I'm leaning towards the countersunk rivnut option, so the mounting bolts have the best quality thread to grip.

I used large self-tappers with a dab of araldite... so far, so good

silly question have you made sure the sender unit is compatible with your fuel gauge before you cut a big hole in your tank?

I used rivnuts

Then made a gasket proud of the rivnuts - and then put the fuel sender gasket onto this and then bolted in - seems to have sealed properely.

As pointed out - make sure the sender unit is compatible with your gauge

Hi.
I did my fuel tank sender yesterday.
I used M5 rivnuts, ones that fit flush with the top of the tank when fitted really tight.

Self tappers , with cork gasket and some sealant, my sender came from an MG Midget, I had to extend the arm to reach the bottom of the tank..............

The sender will be compatible with my Gauge, mainly because I don't have a gauge yet, and I am intending to make a digital gauge as an exercise in programming a Microcontroller!

I'll more than likely have to modify the arm too to make sure it clears the tank edges, and also reaches the bottom.

I didn't think about using an additional gasket, pesky landrover parts place that threw me off the track by saying it needed a flat seating face!

Rivnuts it is then!
