Guys,
Getting to the stage where I will need to fit my Zetec in the Avon. My Zetec is a 1.8 phase 1 engine from an escort, so is an all alloy sump. 2
questions. Do most people shorten because they have a 2.0L which I believe is a deeper sump?
1 Does the blanking plate between the engine and gearbox and gearbox on stop you from fitting/ removing the sump?
2 Shortening the sump How much extra ground clearance will I get and secondly whats the best option for shortening it.
The DIY welding option is not for me.
Ive read several reports on the Tiger shortening leaking oil and some of the others appear to me to be very expensive. Also there is the issue of
maintaining the engines oil capacity.
Also open to any other comments on this.
Thanks
fitted my escort sump it is about 2" shorter and gives enough ground clearance without shortening, the plate can be left in place if you need to
remove sump
I have an escort sump in mine. The ground clearance i have is just about acceptable but im running my car very low.
They are easy enough to change when the engines in. Well at least in a locost anyway. My plan is to see how it goes when its nearly finished and
maybe change for a scholar engines shorter one.
I would suggest you fit it first and see what its like.
most shortened sumps are just cut to about 165mm and then boxed front to back to try and recoup volume.
Some are baffled some aren't.
A decent local welder should be able to do it pretty cheaply

I wouldn't bother shortening the sump.
Have a Scholar Shallow baffled sump on mine, it came with a shortened oil pick-up pipe.
Don't have any oil surge problems and it's a nice piece of work.
It's alot shallower than the escort zetec sump i had before.
Only problem is it was £175 exchange
If you plan on doing some track days i'd be wary of using an un-baffled sump, it may end in tears

A vote from me for the scholar sump. Received mine day after ordering and it is a nice piece of work.
Me three on the Scholar sump. As its baffled it will help when I thrash it.
Quality of welding is A1 and hasnt leaked yet.
