I know the good ol' Ford Vulcan was not the best choice for my Locost, but it was virtually given to me.
So now that I am going to take it to the shop for a complete rebuild I am asking: what should I have done to it to move the nominal 145 bhp@4800 to... 170 bhp @ whatever.
I have my own theories but I would like to hear yours. Thanks.

The Ford V6 is very expensive to rebuild and tune. You may be cheaper to swap it for a Ford Cosworth V6 24 valve as this will give 200 bhp out of the box and is based on the ohv V6.

145bhp out of a 3litre with iron block and iron heads....

Even if you get it to 170bhp it's not exactly gonna be a killer is it... and with all that weight!
A full rebuild I'd imagine won't be cheap.

A zetec would give you that much power for little effort and would cost next to nothing!

I get more than that out of my Pinto!

Ford Iron V6 is a bit of an old monster. Not sure, but must weigh 180kgs, not a good start if your only want 170hp.

There are better engines out there that can produce 170hp as they come with no additional expence. If you want Ford then Duratec is a good option just requires a bit of thought for the gearbox.
