In my quest to make a decent engine for as little money as possible I have a couple of questions:

1. Would a Kent RL2 cam be too much on a pinto running on a 38DGAS carb with flowed head and reasonably std bottom end?

2. Are ARP conrod bolts a must have? And if fitted do the big end tunnels have to be resized?

1. I suspect it would be too much. go for a FR 32 or similar.
2. no need for arp bolts

Which engine are you starting with? is it an injection engine?

The injection bottom end should be ok up to your rev limit - I take mine up to 7500 in bursts and hasn't let go yet

What sort of power are you after? The 38 DGAS will be ok up to about 150BHP and probably wont want to go much over 7000 anyway.

If you do your own head work you can keep the cost reasonable but you might want to skim the head to raise the compression ratio a bit.

The engine was carbed. But is a 1988 205 block engine and has the widebeam rods in as all the injection engines had.

I will be more than happy with 140-150bhp

I am in the process of doing my own head work at the moment its not finished yet though. (Std sized valves but flowed ports)

The std compression ratio is just over 9:1 if i remember rightly. I have read 10:1 is a good ratio to go for though?

If you (or anyone else) are thinking of using the 38 DGAS, speak to John Wade of John Wade Developments in Wolverhampton. John can get more power out of a 38 DGAS than just about anyone & his prices are really reasonable.

Ive used the Fr32. It ticks over nicely and apart from never being set up properly yet it seems to rev OK. Im hoping to release some more 'hosses' with megajolt and bike carbs soon. Following that it will need good RR tune.

I ported my own head probs same as you are doing David (Des Hammill book). To be honest i didnt take as much off as he suggests but did start with injection head. I had 40thou skimmed off it. Im running 18deg advance at the mo - it ran well on the track but pinks a bit when cold. Im going to back it off and see if that helps. Ive only set up the fuelling with a colour tune but am convinced its a little rich.

Fully balancing the bottom end seems to pay big dividends, especially with lightened flywheel. Ive already looked into the costs of this from Mookaloids engine builder who is very reasonable.


Marks 180+ engine is an unbelievable lump. Certainly wet my appetite for some mods.

I have just got hold of an FR22 for £50 (the predecessor to the FR32 i believe? - the specs are almost identical on the kent website. 0.18mm lees lift and 10deg less duration on inlet, but 5 more on exhaust)

Instead of getting the head skimmed I may just fit a felpro head gasket which is only 1mm thick, so raises the compression ratio to about 9.8:1 if i remember correctly.

I am working to the Hamill book, only doing the modifications he suggests for standard valve sizes (valve throat and short turn mods only).
