I remember coming across various articles on people modifying the type 9 top plate to add an oil filler hole....but cannot find where I had seen it. I'm interested in doing this now but cannot seem to find where I saw this. Has anyone done it? Do you have pictures?

Why?. How would you know when it was upto level?

Fill it through the top and use a dipstick upto the filler plug level, or fill it before you put it in the car.

You only ever need to fill it once realy so it seems a bit of a waste of time and money to put a filler in the top.

A lot of people change the box oil when they change the engine oil - its a degree of paranoia for crunched gears etc / i've just spent a fortune on a modified set of gears.

plus if you're taking the box out a lot it does make it easier.

I would guess something like a plumbing Tank connector and an endcap could be used then, Or cut a thread in the to plate and plug it with either a proper sump plug or a BSP plug.

I drilled a hole in the top plate, welded in a threaded boss and fitted a big brass plug. Now I can check the oil level without shifting the gearbox - there's no way I could get to the overflow holes in the side.

You'd have to fit a drain plug to get the old oil out then make sure you put the required amount back in unless you remove the gearbox when you change the engine oil. I don't recall mine having anything but a filler plug on the side.

Don't auto boxes have the facility for checking the level and toping it up?

Maybe that could be adapted if there anything like similar.

(also does it matter if there's too much oil in? i've heard it causes cooling problems and doesn't circulate properly)
